TOOTSIE ROLLS

In 1896, Austrian immigrant Leo Hirshfield started his candy business in New York City. He named his chewy candy after his daughter Clara "Tootsie" Hirschfield. The Tootsie Roll was a cheap, artificial alternative to traditional chocolates. The Tootsie Roll Pop was invented in 1931.

The low price made them popular during the Depression Era. During World War II, Tootsie Rolls were part of American soldiers' field rations. Today, Tootsie Roll Industries is one of the largest candy makers in the world. More than 64 million Tootsie Rolls are made every day.
